Animals Of The Primate Family

The primates are mammals which live the tropical and subtropical forests. Humans are part of the family of primates.

One of the characteristics of a primate which differentiates it from the other animals is that it has hands with 5 fingers of which the thumb is opposable with the four other fingers. The thumb makes it possible to clutch or take objects and to hold them. It does not have flat claws but nails, which are not generally a good means of defense.

The primates can walk upright. Some are less skilful there than others like the orangutang which has short legs. The majority are more skilful in the trees, contrary to man, and their arms are very strong so that they can carry their weight while moving in the branches. Humans who spends more time upright had to developed good legs.

A primate, just like the man, has 32 teeth, and some have rather imposing hooks which they are used to be defended as they do not have claws, like the baboons. Some have a long tail which they use in their movements through the branches.

The genital apparatus and mating are similar to that of human, as much in the male as that in the female. The gestation period is long, from 5 to 9 months depend on the species and at the same time gives birth only to one young. The new-born remains several years with it's mother to learn the way of the species.

In nature, they are not equipped with effective means of defense against a tiger or another aggressive predator. They run away and flee to the trees more than fight. Man that has survived through natural selection because of his larger and evolved/moved brain that the other animal species. Its language, its capacity to think, invent and use tools enabled him to survive.

A primate is covered with hair, like any mammalian animals, but does not have thick fur which protects it from extreme cold. They are omnivorous animals, because their food as many consists fruits as of insects and other small animals which they can capture.

In nature, certain species live in groups of several individuals with a dominant male.
