A carnivorous animal is an animal which feeds almost exclusively on meat. Often it is a predator as a feline which hunts live prey, but the scavengers must compete with vultures.
To the carnivorous mammals, the carnivorous teeth are made to cut the meat of preys. The carnivorous animals are it because of their adaptation to consume some meat and to digest animal cells.
The carnivorous animal is not inevitably a predator, the hyena is primarily a scavenger and is going to content itself with a scraps, before hunting small animals.
A carnivore is an opportunist animal as the majority of animals, thus a small meal of fruits or the other food than it is capable of eating and of digesting will not be of refusal. But as a general rule, it is going to feed on a meal of meat.
The carnivorous animal is equipped with the jaw, the teeth, the digestive system and the other characters which allows him to feed exclusively on meat and to obtain all the nutrition from it which it needs.
Insects and carnivorous plants feed only on living substances, as the ladybird which feeds mainly on aphids. It is because the digestive system is made to use materials resulting from the other animals to supply their body of the constituents which serves for keeping it in shape.
Naturally, the carnivorous animal is often higher in the food chain, because it feeds on herbivores, or the other carnivores of which he can make his prey. |
